Watch “ISS” here
I was searching YouTube today for songs about space to show my children because that is their home school theme this week. When I came across this song I must admit I totally geeked out.
The Barenaked Ladies (of the Big Bang Theory theme tune fame, among many other awesome tracks) recorded this unique song in collaboration with astronaut Chris Hadfield, who was sitting on the International Space Station for the performance!
Add in a choir called the Wexford Gleeks (yes I also first misread that as geeks!) and you have a truly out of this world song.
The song was recorded in 2013, while Hadfield (who like the Barenaked Ladies is Canadian) was commander of the International Space Station.
It became an internet sensation, being viewed more than 2 million times.
He had gained fame for regularly playing the guitar in zero gravity during crossings to the space station. His last act before handing over command was to perform David Bowie’s classic Space Oddity. Now that’s cool!
His recordings were later packaged as an album called Space Sessions: Songs From A Tin Can, released in 2015.
Now that’s the way to transition to a new career when your time in space comes to an end!
